Apex vs Topstep 2026: Every Rule Side by Side, Sourced and Dated.

Topstep's Trading Combine against Apex's EOD and Intraday evaluations, row by row on the same account size: the drawdown and where it stops, daily loss limits, consistency, payout timing and split, news, accounts, platforms and prices, each read from the firms' own pages on 2026-10-18. One invented week, animated, puts both floors on one chart.

Explainer cover titled Apex vs Topstep: same week, two floors. A line chart of an invented week on two 50K evaluations: the closing balance rises from $50,000 to $52,800; Topstep's red Maximum Loss Limit trails from $48,000 and locks at $50,000 once Tuesday closes at $52,700, past the dashed $52,000 lock line, while Apex's dashed orange EOD threshold keeps trailing to $50,800.

Apex vs Topstep: on their end-of-day versions, both trail a $2,000 loss floor on 50K, then part ways. Topstep's Trading Combine locks it at your start once a close reaches $52,000 and adds a 55% consistency target. Apex's evaluation keeps trailing until you pass, with no consistency rule; its 50% rule waits at the payout desk. Topstep bills monthly until you pass, Apex once per 30-day attempt. Topstep pays 90% of each request; Apex pays 100%, six payouts at most.

Apex vs Topstep drawdown: the same $2,000, a different stop

On the end-of-day versions, both firms set the evaluation floor $2,000 under your highest close and enforce it in real time. Topstep's stops rising at your start. Apex's stops only a full drawdown past the target ($53,000 once a close goes above $55,000 on 50K, on Rithmic and WealthCharts; never on Tradovate), so in practice it trails until you pass. Apex's Intraday version also follows open profit.

Same week, two floors. The post's invented week on two 50K evaluations, close by close: Topstep's limit locks at the start once a close reaches $52,000; Apex's threshold keeps trailing.

Illustrative balances, not market data: the trades are invented. The rules are the firms' own, as quoted on this page and read 2026-10-18: Topstep's $2,000 limit trails end-of-day closes and locks at the $50,000 start; Apex's $2,000 EOD threshold trails the highest close and, in an evaluation, stops only a full drawdown past the target.

Rule: Topstep: the highest close − $2,000, never above the $50,000 start. Apex EOD: the highest close − $2,000, never down. Both are watched in real time, open P&L included.

  2. Mon: close $50,700. Both floors trail up to $48,700.
  3. Tue: close $52,700, past $52,000. Topstep's limit locks at $50,000; Apex's threshold trails on to $50,700.
  4. Wed: −$800. Neither floor moves down: Topstep's $50,000, Apex's $50,700.
  5. Thu: close $52,500, no new high. The floors stay at $50,000 and $50,700.
  6. Fri: close $52,800. Apex's threshold rises to $50,800; Topstep's stays locked at $50,000.

The week behind the film, invented, with the same closes under both rulebooks. Both floors start at $48,000; each value is the floor after that close.

After Wednesday's loss, Topstep's locked limit leaves $1,900 of room; Apex's EOD threshold leaves $1,200, its Intraday one $1,100. By Friday Apex's floor sits $800 higher than Topstep's ($900 on Intraday). Once funded, the two nearly converge: both stop after a run-up of about $2,000, Apex's floor $100 above the start. The mechanics in general: static vs trailing drawdown.

Apex vs Topstep daily loss limit

On 50K both are $1,000, and both flatten you for the rest of the session without failing the account. The difference is who chooses: Apex builds it into the EOD evaluation (the Intraday one has none), while at Topstep it's a box you tick at checkout, fixed from then on. Both reset at 6 PM ET (Topstep writes 5 PM CT): 22:00 UTC while the US is on daylight time and 23:00 UTC in winter, 11 PM in London (10 PM in the weeks when only one side has changed its clocks).

Apex vs Topstep consistency rule

Topstep applies its rule to pass the evaluation: a best day over 55% of the target raises the target to best day ÷ 0.55. Apex's evaluations list consistency as "Not Applied," and its 50% rule only decides when a funded account can request a payout. In the week above, Tuesday's $2,000 is over Topstep's $1,650 line, so its target becomes $2,000 ÷ 0.55 = $3,636.37, rounded up to the cent. Apex's stays at $3,000. Each rule in full: Topstep's consistency rule and Apex's payout rules.

Each day's closed P&L in dollars; a minus sign for a loss. Up to 10 days.

Topstep 50K Combine

Target raised to $3,636.37

Your $2,000 best day is over $1,650, 55% of the $3,000 target, so the target becomes $2,000 ÷ 0.55 = $3,636.37. You need $436.37 more, on later days of no more than $2,000: at least 1 more day.

Apex 50K EOD evaluation

Passes on day 6

Day 6's close of $53,200 reaches the $53,000 target balance. Apex's evaluation has no consistency rule; its Performance Account's payouts do (50%).

  • No daily loss limit cut a day. A dip under a floor during a session fails the account even if the day closes above it; the check sees closes only.

Starts on the invented week from the film, plus a Monday of +$400. The rules are each firm's own, read on 2026-10-18: Topstep's Maximum Loss Limit, profit target and 55% Consistency Target; Apex's threshold and target. The check sees closes only, so a dip under a floor during a session isn't in it, and it doesn't count Apex's 30-day window. Each firm's dashboard is the source of truth.

It opens on the invented week plus a Monday of +$400. At 100K and 150K it uses each firm's own numbers: targets of $6,000 and $9,000 at both, Topstep's $3,000 and $4,500 limits against Apex's $3,000 and $4,000, and daily loss limits of $2,000 and $3,000 (Topstep, if added) or $1,500 and $2,000 (Apex EOD).

Same six days, two verdicts: Apex's EOD evaluation passes on day 6 at $53,200, while Topstep's Combine still needs $436.37, on days of no more than $2,000, because Tuesday raised its target.

Apex vs Topstep payouts

Topstep lets you request half your balance and keeps 10%. Apex lets you request only the profit above a safety net, keeps nothing, and stops at six payouts.

A worked example, invented: six funded days on 50K of +$400, +$600, +$300, +$500, +$700 and +$500, $3,000 in all. On Topstep's Standard path half the $3,000 balance is $1,500, under the $2,000 cap; you receive $1,350, or $1,320 by ACH after its $30 fee. On Apex's EOD account the balance is $53,000, the largest day is 23.33% of the profit, and you can request $900, the part above $52,100, all of it yours. Afterward Topstep's account holds $1,500 over a $0 floor; Apex's holds $52,100 over a $50,100 floor. Processing: Topstep's "Internal approval can take 1-3 business days" and ACH another 1-3; Apex says most traders are paid "within 5–11 business days total." Every payout rule, cap and method: Topstep's payout rules and Apex's payout rules.

Apex or Topstep: which rule matters for which trader

Conditions, not advice:

  • One big day makes most of your week: Topstep's 55% raises your Combine target; Apex's evaluation ignores it, but its payouts apply 50%.
  • You give back part of a run-up: past $52,000 on 50K, Topstep's locked limit leaves more room; Apex's threshold keeps following you up.
  • Winners run and retrace within the day: Apex's Intraday threshold rises with the open peak; Apex EOD and Topstep wait for the close.
  • One bad day is your risk: Apex's 50K EOD evaluation flattens you at −$1,000; at Topstep that's a box you tick at checkout.
  • You trade the 8:30 AM ET releases: Topstep's window blocks new index and metal minis; Apex sets none.
  • You run a bot: Topstep allows it with conditions; Apex doesn't.

Where do Apex's and Topstep's own pages disagree?

  1. Apex payout denials. Its home page says "No Payout Denials"; its EOD Payouts page says that if the balance falls below the line after a request, "the payout will be denied automatically."
  2. Apex days between payouts. EOD Payouts asks for 5 qualifying days ($250 on a 50K EOD account); Payout Method Information says "eight days, including at least five days with profits of $50 or more."
  3. Apex's 50% line. The 50% Consistency Requirement page says the largest day "must represent less than 50%," but its own example says a $1,500 best day needs net profit of "at least $3,000," which is exactly 50%.
  4. Who Apex serves. The footer of its home page says "Services are intended for U.S. users only"; its Restricted Countries page says "Traders from over 100 countries can participate."
  5. Topstep's 55% line. Consistency at Topstep says "at or below 55%"; Trading Combine Parameters and the Program Overview say "below 55%." Stay under it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Apex or Topstep better?

Neither firm's pages make one better across the board, so we don't pick one. Topstep's Combine locks its loss limit at your start after a run-up, applies a 55% consistency target in the evaluation and bills monthly until you pass. Apex's evaluation has no consistency rule and costs one fee for 30 days, but its threshold keeps trailing, and its payouts need a largest day under 50% of profit. Both firms' pages were read on 2026-10-18.

Which has the better drawdown, Apex or Topstep?

It depends on how your trades move. Their end-of-day versions both trail closes by $2,000 on 50K, but Topstep's Maximum Loss Limit locks at the $50,000 start once a close reaches $52,000, while Apex's evaluation threshold keeps trailing until you pass. Apex also sells an Intraday version that trails open profit, and in its Performance Account the threshold stops at the start plus $100.

Do Apex and Topstep have a consistency rule?

Topstep's Trading Combine does: your best day must stay at or below 55% of the profit target, or the target becomes best day ÷ 0.55; its Express Funded Account's Consistency path uses 40%. Apex's evaluation has none, but every Performance Account payout needs the largest day under 50% of the profit since the last payout.

Which pays out faster, Apex or Topstep?

On paper they're close. Topstep's Standard path needs 5 winning days of $150 or more per payout and its Consistency path 3 trading days; Apex needs 5 days of $250 or more on a 50K EOD account. Topstep pays you 90% of up to half the balance, capped at $2,000 per request on 50K Standard ($4,000 while its limited-time offer runs, if you added a Daily Loss Limit at Combine checkout); Apex pays 100% of the profit above a $52,100 safety net, capped at $1,500 on the first payout, and closes the account after 6. Processing: Topstep's internal approval can take 1–3 business days and ACH another 1–3; Apex says most traders are paid within 5–11 business days in total.

Can you trade news at Apex and Topstep?

Yes at both, with limits. Topstep blocks new opening trades in index and metal minis for 5 minutes either side of Tier 1 releases such as CPI and the jobs report. Apex allows news for your normal strategy, bans strategies that chase the market or place orders on both sides, and publishes no time window.

How much do Apex and Topstep cost?

Topstep's 50K Combine is $49 a month on the Standard path plus $149 to activate each funded account, or $95 a month with no activation fee. Apex's 50K evaluation is a one-time $590 (EOD) or $249 (Intraday) at list price for 30 days, plus a $129 or $99 activation fee, or a higher price with none. On 2026-10-18 Apex's site showed a 90% coupon; discounts change often.

Is Apex or Topstep easier for a new trader?

Neither firm's pages rate difficulty, and we won't either. The differences a new trader meets first: Topstep needs at least two days to pass because of its 55% rule, and its Daily Loss Limit is optional; Apex lets you pass in one day, builds a $1,000 daily loss limit into the 50K EOD evaluation, and gives you 30 calendar days per fee.
