Does leverage change your crypto position size, or only your liquidation price?

On USDT-margined perpetual futures (BTCUSDT, ETHUSDT, SOLUSDT), your dollar loss at a stop-loss is determined by coin quantity times stop distance (coin quantity = dollar risk ÷ |entry − stop|), not by the leverage slider. Changing leverage from 5× to 20× does not change what you lose at your stop-loss — it only changes the initial margin required to open the position and where your isolated liquidation price sits.

The fatal mistake on high leverage is setting a leverage multiplier whose liquidation distance is narrower than your stop-loss distance. If your stop-loss is 4.0% away from entry but you select 25× isolated leverage (where liquidation triggers roughly 3.5% from entry at a 0.5% maintenance margin rate), the exchange liquidates your position before price ever reaches your stop-loss.

How do taker fees and prop-firm daily drawdowns change a crypto position?

Perpetual futures exchanges charge maker and taker fees on the full notional position value, not on your initial margin. A 0.05% taker entry and 0.05% taker exit cost 0.10% of notional round-trip. On a $5,000 notional trade (1% risk with a 2% stop on a $10,000 account), round-trip taker fees add $5.00 to a stopped trade; on a tight 0.4% scalp stop ($25,000 notional), the same 0.10% round-trip fee costs $25.00 — adding 25% to your planned $100 stop loss.

If you trade crypto perpetuals inside a funded account or evaluation, check how your position's stop-loss plus round-trip fees fit inside your daily drawdown room in the daily loss limit calculator, compare best-day profit caps in the prop firm consistency calculator, or size equity and forex positions in the stock position size calculator and forex position size calculator.

Method and privacy

Method: Coin quantity = dollar risk budget ÷ |entry − stop|; notional = coin quantity × entry; initial margin = notional ÷ leverage. Isolated long liquidation ≈ entry × (1 − 1/leverage + MMR) and short liquidation ≈ entry × (1 + 1/leverage − MMR). Does not model funding-rate debits, mark-price basis spikes, or tiered maintenance margin step-ups on large notionals.

A link with your numbers carries them after the # sign, which browsers do not send to servers, and the page takes them out of the address before any analytics loads. Common questions

How do you calculate crypto position size from a stop-loss?

Divide your dollar risk budget (account balance × risk %) by the price distance between your entry and stop-loss (|entry − stop|). Risking $100 (1% of $10,000) on BTCUSDT at $68,000 with a stop at $66,600 ($1,400 distance) gives 0.071429 BTC ($4,857.14 notional).

Does higher leverage change my dollar loss if my stop-loss hits?

No, provided your stop-loss triggers before your liquidation price. Leverage only reduces the initial margin required to open the position ($4,857.14 notional requires $485.71 margin at 10× or $242.86 at 20×). If leverage is set so high that isolated liquidation sits inside your stop, the exchange liquidates you before your stop is reached.

What is the difference between isolated and cross liquidation price?

In Isolated Margin, only the initial margin allocated to that position backs the trade, so liquidation occurs when the move against you reaches roughly (1 ÷ leverage − maintenance margin rate). In Cross Margin, your full available account balance backs the position, pushing liquidation further away but exposing the whole account if no stop is used.

How do maker and taker fees affect perpetual futures position sizing?

Perpetual futures charge maker and taker fees on total notional value, not on margin. A 0.05% taker entry and 0.05% taker exit equal 0.10% of notional round-trip, which adds to your loss on a stopped trade and shifts your true break-even price.
