Prop firm drawdown: why an intraday wick can fail an account that an end-of-day (EOD) trail keeps
Two prop firms can advertise the exact same $2,000 maximum trailing drawdown on a $50,000 account and yet behave completely differently during a winning trade that pulls back. Under an intraday high-water mark trailing drawdown (used on Apex Intraday, MyFundedFutures Rapid sim funded, and Tradeify Lightning), your liquidation floor rises dollar-for-dollar with your highest unrealized open equity peak during the session.
If your trade runs up +$1,500 intraday before pulling back to close at +$200, an intraday floor rises by the full $1,500 (to $49,500), leaving only $700 of room at the close — whereas an end-of-day (EOD) trailing drawdown waits for the session close and rises by only $200 (to $48,200), leaving $2,000 of room.
| Drawdown engine | What moves the floor | Where the floor locks | Examples across prop firms |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intraday trailing (with lock) | Highest unrealized open equity moment | Starting balance + $100 (or $0) | Apex Intraday (locks +$100 on PA), MFFU Rapid Funded (+$100) |
| End-of-day (EOD) trailing | Closed balance at 4:10 PM / 5:00 PM ET | Starting balance + $100 or $0 | Topstep Combine & XFA, MFFU Rapid EOD / Builder / Pro, Apex EOD |
| Static drawdown | Never moves above initial floor | Fixed at start − max drawdown | FTMO 2-Step (10% static), MyFundedFutures Studio |
After your drawdown floor locks: check your firm's payout and consistency rules
Once your trailing floor locks at starting balance + $100, building the payout buffer is the next gate before requesting a withdrawal. Check your exact account in the Apex consistency & payout calculator, the MyFundedFutures payout & buffer calculator, the Topstep consistency calculator, or the FTMO payout & consistency calculator. For a single-number static vs percentage trailing comparison, see the trailing drawdown calculator.
