FTMO Swing Account: No News or Weekend Limits, Leverage Cut to 1:30

FTMO's Swing account type, from FTMO's own pages on 2026-10-22: the three things it changes (leverage, the news window and the market-break rule), the 2-Step rules it keeps, leverage symbol by symbol, swaps, price, payouts and switching. One invented $100,000 Swing account holds a trade through a weekend gap and a news release, and we work out where FTMO's daily loss line sits at each step.

PL · 13 min read
Explainer cover titled FTMO Swing: the weekend gap still counts. The post's invented $100,000 Swing account from Friday to Monday: equity $101,000, then $99,500 with a trade held over the weekend, $96,800 after Monday's gap and $95,600 after a news release, under the $96,000 Max Daily Loss floor.
FTMO's Swing account is a type of 2-Step FTMO Challenge, not a separate program. It keeps the 2-Step's rules: a 10% then 5% profit target, a Maximum Daily Loss of 5% of initial capital ($5,000 on $100,000) and a static 10% Maximum Loss. Once you're on the FTMO Account, it drops the 2-minute news window and the rule against holding through the weekend or any market break over 2 hours. The cost is leverage: up to 1:30 on forex instead of 1:100, about 30% of Standard's on every symbol. You choose it when you order and can later switch to Standard, never the other way.

The FTMO Swing account at a glance

Swing is chosen per 2-Step order, and the numbers are the 2-Step's. FTMO prints the $100,000 example; the other rows apply its percentages.

On every size: 4 minimum trading days per phase, no time limit, Rewards of 80% rising to 90%, and on the FTMO Account no news window and no market-break rule. FTMO's Comparison Table gives the 2-Step's account types as "Standard account, Swing account", and the 1-Step's and Instant's as Standard only.

Sources, checked 2026-10-22: Trading Objectives, What is the Swing account type, and how does it work?, Comparison Table, the pricing table on FTMO's home page.

What is the FTMO Swing account?

An account type, picked when you configure a 2-Step FTMO Challenge. FTMO: "Account type changes the account’s leverage, the rule for holding trades during market close, and the rule for news trading."

Swing has "No restrictions on trading during restricted news releases or holding positions past market close for more than 2 hours (e.g., over the weekend or overnight for equities), provided you avoid Forbidden Trading Practices". In exchange, "the account’s base leverage is reduced from 1:100 to 1:30".

  • 2-Step only. "It is not offered for the 1-Step FTMO Challenge or the FTMO Instant Account," so a 1-Step account is always Standard. FTMO US, the site for US residents, has its own terms (how they differ).
  • One way. "If you purchase an FTMO Challenge as a Standard account type, it is not possible to change it to a Swing account type at a later stage." Swing can become Standard "for accounts with no trades", which includes the new account you get after each passed phase and each Reward.
  • Merging. A Swing FTMO Account merged with a Standard one "will be a Standard type account". Two Swing accounts stay Swing only below a size FTMO doesn't name (below).

What are the FTMO Swing account rules?

The 2-Step's Trading Objectives, unchanged: the Trading Objectives page has no Swing section.

Maximum Loss10% of initial capital, staticSameSame
Minimum Trading Days44None

Four details matter more when you hold trades for days:

  • You pass, and withdraw, flat. The target counts "with all positions closed", and a Reward needs "All open positions and pending orders" closed.
  • A held trade is one trading day. "If a trade is held over multiple days, only the day of execution counts as the trading day."
  • Both floors count open trades. Equity is "Balance + Open Positions P/L ± Swaps – Commissions", and the Maximum Loss "includes commissions and swaps."
  • A breach ends it. "If you breach a Maximum Loss or Maximum Daily Loss rule, the platform automatically closes all your open positions, and the account is considered failed, and you lose the account."

Swing vs Standard: what's the difference?

Three rules, and two of them start only on the FTMO Account. In the FTMO Challenge and Verification both types may trade news and hold through the weekend.

What leverage does the FTMO Swing account have?

Up to 1:30 on forex. Standard's "is up to 1:100 and cannot be increased", and "The Swing account type has leverage set to up to 1:30". FTMO's Symbols page lists both for every symbol, as "Leverage" and "Leverage Swing", and 1:30 is the forex figure:

Symbols, by FTMO's groupsStandardSwing

By our arithmetic, Swing's leverage is 30% of Standard's on all 166 symbols, so every position ties up about 3.3 times the margin. One lot of EURUSD at an invented 1.1200 is $112,000: $1,120 of margin at 1:100, $3,733.33 at 1:30.

Leverage changes the margin a trade ties up, never the loss limits: $5,000 a day and a $90,000 floor on a $100,000 account, on either type.

For 1:30 to stop you first, you'd need about $3,000,000 of forex exposure on $100,000, nearly 27 lots of EURUSD, where a move of about 19 pips costs the whole $5,000 (our arithmetic; FTMO's pages we read give no margin-call or stop-out levels).

Can you hold positions over the weekend on an FTMO Swing account?

Yes, in every phase. A Standard FTMO Account must close before any break over 2 hours: "You must close all open positions before the break begins." That's the weekend on nearly every symbol, and every night on stocks, which trade 16:35–23:00 platform time; forex pauses for only 10 minutes a night. Swing removes the rule. Two things stay:

  • Opening late on a Friday. The Forbidden Trading Practices count as gap trading opening trades "two hours or less before a relevant financial market is closed for at least two hours". Forex closes at 23:55 platform time on Friday, so by our reading a forex trade opened at 21:55 or later falls inside that wording, at FTMO's discretion. Holding a trade opened earlier is what Swing allows.
  • The daily loss limit keeps resetting, on Saturday and Sunday too, and the open loss you carry comes with it (below).

Weekend trading is a separate question: "If the market is open, you are free to trade as usual." Crypto CFDs trade on Saturday and Sunday; forex, gold and indices show "trading is closed" both days.

Sources, checked 2026-10-22: Can I hold positions overnight or over the weekend?, Can I trade on the weekend?, Forbidden Trading Practices, Symbols.

Can you trade news on an FTMO Swing account?

Yes. On Standard FTMO Accounts, "FTMO restricts order execution for 2 minutes before and 2 minutes after selected news releases", a Stop Loss or Take Profit fill included. Swing accounts are exempt, so on Swing that fill is just a fill. Which releases and symbols the window covers is in our FTMO news trading guide.

The exemption still runs through the Forbidden Trading Practices, which count as gap trading opening trades "when major global news, macroeconomic events, or corporate reports or earnings are scheduled and they might affect the relevant financial market". Holding a position opened earlier through a release is the case FTMO's wording clearly allows.

Sources, checked 2026-10-22: Can I trade news?, Forbidden Trading Practices.

How FTMO counts the day, and what a weekend does to it

The Maximum Daily Loss is a floor for your equity, set once a day:

  • From the balance. The floor is "the account balance recorded at 00:00 CE(S)T of the current day" minus 5% of initial capital, and it "remains in effect until the next recalculation". Balance "changes only when a trade is closed", so a losing trade carried past midnight starts the new day with its loss already in equity.
  • At Prague's midnight. "Max Daily Loss is monitored based on Prague’s time and the daily drawdown resets at midnight." MetaTrader runs an hour ahead of Prague (two hours from 26 October to 1 November 2026), so the reset falls at 01:00 platform time. Account MetriX shows a countdown: "hover your mouse cursor over Today’s permitted loss. The tooltip has a countdown to the reset." By our conversion that's 11:00 p.m. in London and 6:00 p.m. in New York most of the year.

The Maximum Loss Limit is "a static limit": $90,000 on a $100,000 account, whatever happens at midnight. The daily floor is the higher line while the midnight balance is above $95,000.

Over a weekend, Saturday's and Sunday's limits are still set from the balance, which doesn't move unless a trade closes, though "commission and swap fees may be reflected in your account balance before a trade is closed, depending on the trading platform’s specific configuration". Forex reopens at 00:05 platform time on Monday, 23:05 on Sunday in Prague by our conversion: the gap lands on Sunday's trading day, against a floor set from Friday's balance.

An invented $100,000 Swing account through a weekend and a release

An invented FTMO Account from a $100,000 2-Step, Swing type, in a week with the usual one-hour offset. Its balance at 00:00 CE(S)T on Friday is $101,000. On Friday morning, with nothing scheduled and hours before the close, it buys 6 lots of EURUSD: $60 a pip. Swaps are left out; they'd come off equity too.

A restricted US release, 20 pips moreMon 14:30$101,000−$5,400$95,600$96,000$90,000−$400, breached

The account fails on Monday afternoon: equity at $95,600 is $400 under the $96,000 floor, so FTMO's platform closes the position and the account is lost. Three midnight resets didn't help, because each set the floor from a balance still at $101,000 while the open loss stayed in equity. The $90,000 Maximum Loss was $5,600 away at the low. Closed on Friday at −$1,500 instead, the trade leaves Monday a $99,500 balance, a $94,500 floor, the full $5,000 of room and no gap.

A loss you carry past midnight is already in the new day's count: FTMO sets the floor from your balance, and the open loss sits in your equity. Here the weekend left $3,500 of Monday's $5,000, and the gap took all but $800.

A Standard FTMO Account couldn't have held the trade into the weekend at all; through the release it could, as long as nothing filled within 2 minutes of it. In the Challenge or Verification either type could have held it, with every number above unchanged.

Run it on your own numbers: Daily loss limit calculator, $100,000 at 5%. Enter 0 as today's realized P&L and the whole open loss as floating, not just today's part of it: −$4,200 reads $800, as FTMO's floor does, and −$5,400 reads −$400. It offsets the day's closed gains against an open loss but never shows more than the $5,000 limit, so on a green day FTMO leaves you more room than it shows.

Does FTMO charge swaps on a Swing account?

Yes, the same as Standard. The Symbols page gives one "Swap Long" and one "Swap Short" per symbol, with no Swing column. On 2026-10-22 EURUSD showed −10.84 and 0.51, XAUUSD −77.22 and −4.2, both in points. A point is $1 on one lot of either, by our arithmetic, so a lot of gold held long cost about $77.22 a night at that rate.

Swaps are charged at the platform's midnight, which moves "from 00:00 GMT+3 to 00:00 GMT+2" on 1 November, and they count against both loss limits through equity. FTMO's warning: "Overnight rollover swaps are subject to regular changes and adjustments", and checking them "in the contract specification for each symbol" is your job.

How much does an FTMO Swing account cost?

FTMO prints no separate Swing price. Its pricing table has one 2-Step list with no account-type option: €89, €250, €345, €540 and €1,080 for $10,000 to $200,000, in euros as shown. "FTMO charges only a one-time purchase fee for the 1-Step FTMO Challenge, 2-Step FTMO Challenge, or FTMO Instant Account."

The $100,000 special deal at €439 is marked "(FTMO Standard account only)", so by its wording it doesn't cover Swing. Whether a Swing order pays the list price, FTMO's public pages don't say; the choice is made in the order's configuration, which we didn't see. The 2-Step refund names no account type: "we will refund you the initial purchase fee once you request your first Reward withdrawal, using the same payment method you used."

Sources, checked 2026-10-22: the pricing table on FTMO's home page, What fees do you charge, and are they recurrent?, Is the entry fee refunded?.

Payouts, scaling and the $400,000 cap on a Swing account

The 2-Step's, with no Swing exception on any of these pages:

  • First Reward "on the 14th or any following day after the first trade is placed on the specific account", everything closed.
  • Split: 80%, then 90% "If the Scaling Plan or Premium Programme conditions are met". Rollover to the next FTMO Account is open to 2-Step accounts.
  • Scaling Plan: open to "An FTMO Account obtained by passing the 1-Step or 2-Step FTMO Challenge", adding 25% of the starting balance every 4 months up to $2,000,000. It doesn't mention account types.
  • Maximum allocation: "$400,000 per trader or strategy (prior to any scaling)", Swing and Standard counted together.

When the first Reward opens and what it pays are in FTMO payout rules and the FTMO payout calculator; the four-month conditions are in FTMO Scaling Plan.

Sources, checked 2026-10-22: How do I withdraw my reward?, Reward Growth and Scaling Plan, How many accounts can I have?.

Where FTMO's pages disagree

  1. News "freely", or gap trading? The news FAQ says Swing accounts "can trade during any news freely, provided that the Forbidden Trading Practices are avoided." The Forbidden Trading Practices count opening trades when major news is "scheduled" as gap trading. FTMO's discretion decides between them.
  2. Overnight, or breaks over 2 hours? The FAQ preview on the 2-Step page, last edited 2026-10-22, says "Overnight and weekend position restrictions apply only to the Standard account type." The full FAQ, edited 2026-10-11, restricts only "market breaks longer than 2 hours", so a Standard FTMO Account may hold forex through its 10-minute nightly pause. The full FAQ is more specific; neither changes anything for Swing.
  3. Swing on every 2-Step size? The Swing FAQ and the Comparison Table offer Swing on the 2-Step with no size limit. The merge FAQ lets Swing accounts merge only while the total stays under "the size of the FTMO Challenge, where the Swing option is not offered", and doesn't say which size that is.

Not published

  • A Swing price, and whether a Swing order pays the 2-Step list fee.
  • Which 2-Step size, if any, is sold without Swing, as the merge FAQ implies.
  • Which night, if any, carries a triple swap, and whether your platform posts swaps to the balance before a trade closes.
  • Margin-call and stop-out levels on either type.
  • Whether a Swing account scaled past that unnamed size stays Swing.

Where we sit

We don't run a prop firm, we're not affiliated with FTMO, and we earn nothing if you buy from FTMO. We sell the Prop Firm Challenge Toolkit, a TradingView indicator that turns rule numbers you type into dollar buffers on your chart. Its FTMO presets date from May 2026, so use Custom. For a $100,000 Swing account:

Toolkit setting (Custom)$100,000 FTMO Swing (2-Step)From

Reset timezone (IANA), hourEurope/Prague, 000:00 CE(S)T

Where it differs from FTMO, plainly. It takes the daily limit as a percentage of the balance you type, which it treats as the day's start, so on a $101,000 morning 5% is $5,050, not FTMO's $5,000 of initial capital. It can't see losses you've already closed today: keep Current balance at the balance from 00:00 CE(S)T and put the day's running P&L, closed and open, in Open floating P/L, including the whole loss of a trade carried in from Friday. It doesn't read FTMO's dashboard: you type the balance in. On Static its $90,000 floor matches FTMO's; only in its trailing modes, which the 2-Step doesn't use, does it matter that the high it trails is the balance you type. Its Days traded count stays at 0, so any Min trading days above 0 keeps its PASSED status from showing. It doesn't know FTMO's restricted releases or calendar, and it has no weekend or market-break rule: it can't warn you a gap is coming.

Frequently asked questions

What is the FTMO Swing account?

An account type you choose when you order a 2-Step FTMO Challenge on ftmo.com. On the FTMO Account it removes the 2-minute news window and the rule against holding positions through market breaks longer than 2 hours, such as the weekend. In exchange, leverage drops from up to 1:100 to up to 1:30 on forex. The profit targets and loss limits are the 2-Step's.

What are the FTMO Swing account rules?

The 2-Step's Trading Objectives: a 10% then 5% profit target, a Maximum Daily Loss of 5% of initial capital under each 00:00 CE(S)T balance, a static 10% Maximum Loss and 4 minimum trading days per phase. A trade held for days counts as one trading day, the day it was opened. The Forbidden Trading Practices still apply, including the ban on opening trades two hours or less before a market closes for two hours or more.

What is the difference between FTMO Swing and Standard accounts?

Three things, two of them only on the FTMO Account. A Standard FTMO Account can't have an order fill on a targeted symbol 2 minutes either side of a restricted release, and must close every position before a market break longer than 2 hours; Swing has neither rule. Swing's leverage is up to 1:30 on forex instead of 1:100, about 30% of Standard's on every symbol.

Can I hold positions over the weekend with FTMO?

In the FTMO Challenge and Verification, yes, on either account type. On the FTMO Account only the Swing type may hold through the weekend or any break longer than 2 hours; a Standard FTMO Account or an Instant Account must close everything first. The daily loss limit still resets at 00:00 CE(S)T on Saturday and Sunday from your balance, so the open loss you carry counts against it.

What leverage does the FTMO Swing account have?

Up to 1:30 on forex, against 1:100 on Standard. FTMO's Symbols page lists 1:20 on most exotics, 1:15 on metals, major indices and crude oil, and 1:1 on crypto and stocks: about 30% of Standard's on each symbol. One lot of EURUSD at an invented 1.1200 ties up $3,733.33 of margin at 1:30 and $1,120 at 1:100.

Can you trade news on an FTMO Swing account?

Yes. The 2-minute window around restricted releases doesn't apply to Swing accounts, so a Stop Loss or Take Profit may fill during a release. FTMO's Forbidden Trading Practices still count opening trades when major news is scheduled as gap trading, so holding a position you opened earlier is the case FTMO's wording clearly allows.

How much does the FTMO Swing account cost?

FTMO doesn't print a separate Swing price. Its pricing table lists the 2-Step at €89, €250, €345, €540 and €1,080 for $10,000 to $200,000, one-time and refunded with the first Reward, and its €439 special deal on $100,000 is marked FTMO Standard account only. FTMO says it charges no recurring fees.
