How spread, commission and slippage compress your real R-multiple

When you place a trade with a 10-pip stop loss and a 20-pip take profit, the chart shows a clean 2.00R reward-to-risk ratio and a 33.3% break-even win rate. In live execution, you buy at the Ask and exit at the Bid: a 1.4-pip all-in spread and slippage cost reduces your net win to 18.6 pips while increasing your effective loss to 11.4 pips—shrinking your actual payoff to 1.63R and pushing your true break-even win rate up to 38.0%. On EURUSD, a 1.2-pip standard spread against a 0.1-pip Raw spread plus $7 round-turn commission (0.8 pips all-in) is a 0.4-pip gap: over 50 trades a month at 1.00 standard lot that is $200 a month, or $2,400 a year. The spreads below are illustrative examples (set 2026-10-22), not quotes from any broker, and the dollar figures assume a USD account.

Method and privacy

Method: Cost per trade = (spread + slippage) × USD value per pip/point per lot × lots + round-turn commission per lot × lots, for both the Standard and the Raw account. Commission in pips = commission per lot ÷ value per pip per lot. Real R:R = (target − cost) ÷ (stop + cost). Assumes a USD-denominated account: enter the USD pip value for non-USD-quoted pairs (e.g. 1,000 ÷ USDJPY for USDJPY) and your broker's index CFD spec.

Common questions

What's the difference between a raw spread and a standard account?

A standard (spread-only) account builds the broker's charge into a wider spread and charges no separate commission. A raw (ECN / Razor) account passes through a tighter spread and charges a commission per lot instead, usually quoted per side or round turn. To compare them, convert the commission into pips: commission per lot ÷ pip value per lot.

Is raw pricing or spread-only better?

Raw wins once the spread gap exceeds the round-turn commission in pips. With the calculator's illustrative EURUSD inputs, a $7.00 round-turn commission is 0.70 pips ($7 ÷ $10), so a 0.10-pip raw spread costs 0.80 pips all-in against 1.20 pips on the standard account: raw saves 0.40 pips ($4.00) per lot. If your standard spread were 0.70 pips or less wider than the raw spread, spread-only would cost the same or less.

Is a Raw ECN account with a $7/lot commission cheaper than a Standard zero-commission account?

It depends on the spreads you actually get. On EURUSD ($10/pip per standard lot), a $7.00 round-turn commission equals 0.70 pips. With an example 0.10-pip raw spread, the all-in cost is 0.80 pips ($8.00/lot), compared with an example 1.20–1.50 pips ($12.00–$15.00/lot) on a standard spread-only account—a saving of $4.00 to $7.00 per standard lot. Enter your broker's own spreads to check.

How do I convert a broker's dollar commission per lot into pips?

Divide the round-turn dollar commission per standard lot by the pair's pip value per standard lot. On USD-quoted majors (EURUSD, GBPUSD, AUDUSD, NZDUSD) and XAUUSD where 1 pip = $10/lot, a $7.00 round-turn commission adds 0.70 pips ($7 / $10) and a $6.00 commission adds 0.60 pips.

Why does broker fee drag matter so much on prop firm evaluations?

On a $100,000 prop firm challenge with a $5,000 daily loss limit and $10,000 max drawdown, trading 100 standard lots over a month with a 1.3-pip all-in cost drains $1,300 in spread and commission—consuming 13% of your entire maximum drawdown allowance regardless of whether your trades win or lose.
