Value Envelope value area indicator for TradingView

On every bar it rebuilds a volume profile of the last 200 bars, draws the value area as a band around the busiest price, and marks each close that rejects it, accepts outside it or comes back in.

Window 1 · from bar 300

Simulated 15-minute gold bars, not a real market, run through Value Envelope's default rules, simplified for the browser: a rolling profile of the last 200 bars, weighted by the model's volume, in rows 0.15 ATR tall, set once its first 200 bars have loaded and re-sized every 1,500. The chart draws the script's Clean view: the value band, the POC in its migration colour, and the event marks. Window 1 is the first simulated acceptance whose window starts at bar 300 or later, once the profile's 200 bars and the width rank's 100 have loaded; Another acceptance plays the next acceptances in order, whatever they do next.

Three closes accept.

One close outside value is a probe; the third in a row is acceptance, and two back inside end it.

BALANCE

80% ↑ to VAH: the second close in a row back inside. The script names it after the 80% rule; the name is not a chance.

  • Close 1 outside value: true, 14:00 · close 1 below value
  • Close 2 outside value: true, 14:15 · close 2 below value
  • ACC: the third close, accepted: true, 14:30 · ACC below

The same simulated 15-minute gold, simplified rules: the replay's window 1, up close. The state words are the dashboard's own.

Outside

A close

Above the VAH or below the VAL; a close on an edge counts as inside.

Accept

Three in a row

Three closes outside on one side, each against its own bar's value area.

Re-enter

Two in a row

Two closes back inside end it: the script marks 80% and leaves ACCEPTED (BALANCE, or COMPRESSED when value is tight).

Switch

The far side

While accepted, three closes beyond the far edge accept that side instead.

A poke is not acceptance.

A bar that reaches past value and closes back is a rejection, but only as a first poke.

Closes above value before it
2,007.25
REJ @VAH the bar reached above value and closed back inside, a first poke. A poke is not acceptance.

A drawn example, not the simulation: only the close and the closes before it change. Each verdict is the desk's own rule.

REJ

A first poke

The high goes past the VAH, the close comes back to it or inside, and the bar before stayed at or under its VAH.

Count

Closes only

A wick outside counts for nothing; only closes build acceptance.

Order

Acceptance first

On a bar that could be both, acceptance comes first and no REJ prints.

Accepted

No rejections

While a side is accepted, no REJ prints at either edge.

Value grows from the POC.

From the busiest row, the two rows above and the two below compare, and the larger pair joins until seventy of every hundred units are inside.

Profile

A drawn profile of 100 units, not the simulation. Each step is the desk's own rule; it adds whole rows, so value can pass seventy.

POC

How do I get the code?

The page, the films and the manual are open to everyone. The script's code is in Pine Pro Library: $49 once for every desk and every update, or as part of the Complete Suite. Sign in to copy or download.

Does 80% mean eight times in ten?

No. It is the name of a trader's rule for a return into value. The script measures no chance, and neither do we.

Why does my band differ from another chart's?

The row height is set once your chart has loaded its first 200 bars and re-sized every 1,500, so a chart that starts on another bar draws different bands and some different marks. The film counts from its own run's first bar.

Does it have an edge?

No measured edge. It describes where closes sit against value and places no trades. What can change the reading says where it stops.

What does Advanced Volume Profile add?

The histogram itself, volume delta per row, naked POCs and absorption. Value Envelope stays complete either way.

What is Value Envelope?

Value Envelope is a TradingView indicator in Pine Pro Library that estimates a volume value area and plots how that band changes over time. It marks the point of control and applies candle-close rules for acceptance, rejection and re-entry. Rolling and anchored modes use candle data rather than individual trades at each price.

Does the 80% label mean an 80% chance of success?

No. It names a re-entry pattern, not a measured success rate. After accepted movement outside the band, the default rule requires two consecutive closes back inside. A broken sequence resets the count before the label can appear. Read acceptance and re-entry rules

How is Value Envelope different from Volume Profile Lite?

Value Envelope retains each bar's calculated band so you can follow its movement over time. Volume Profile Lite redraws a histogram for the current selected window. Both estimate activity across price rows from candle data. Read how the band is calculated

What happens when the chart has no volume data?

Auto weighting falls back to one weight per candle when cumulative available volume is zero. This is an activity proxy, not actual volume or time spent at each price. An individual zero-volume candle does not trigger that fallback. Read the weighting settings

Illustrative prices. We use six candles, then add two, with fixed price rows. The real indicator’s default uses 200 candles. Activity at each price is estimated.

How does this help a trade?

It gives your plan a location and a sequence to study. Decide your own entry, exit and loss limit. The band does not tell you which trade will win.

What does “value” mean here?

It means an area containing a chosen share of estimated activity—70% by default. It is not a valuation of the asset or proof that its price is fair. The busiest line can sit above or below the band’s middle.

Watch the close, one candle at a time.

Try the same idea three ways. The defaults need three closes outside, then two back inside.

Price is inside the band.

The close is between the upper and lower edges. There is no accepted-outside state yet.

Outside in a row0 / 3 closes
Inside in a row1 / 2 closes

A return requires an earlier hold outside.

This lesson holds the band still so you can follow the counts. On your chart, each candle is compared with its own recalculated band. A close on either edge counts as inside.

Why doesn’t touching the band always count?

The tool counts where a candle closes. A wick can enter the band while the close stays outside. Also, a return needs an earlier established hold—not just one candle outside.

  1. 1 The colored band

The main activity area. VAH is its upper edge; VAL is its lower edge.

  2. 2 The line inside

POC marks the busiest price row. It is not necessarily halfway between the edges.

  3. 3 The labels on candles

ACC records a hold outside. 80% names the return rule. REJ marks a specific failed-edge test.

“80%” is the rule’s name, not a probability for your chart. It does not mean the opposite edge will be reached eight times out of ten.

Try changing price and volume to move the real calculation

This example recalculates the rolling band from fictional candles. Choose “Close back above”, then “More volume here”. Both keep the last close at 110, but the extra volume moves the band so that close is now inside. Earlier candles keep their own bands.

Move the close. See the band and the rule respond.

Price and volume both matter. Edit the same candle to recalculate its profile, then see whether its close completes acceptance or re-entry.

The engine uses absolute price rows, a centre-nearest POC tie and two-row value expansion. Value covers 70 of 100 volume units; the extended area targets 90. Its current bounds are 87 to 100; the occupied range is 87 to 113.

The row height is 1, calibrated from ATR(50) and frozen for this epoch. POC migration reads flat, with a strict threshold of 1.59. POC placement gives shape P. These are calculated context, not orders.

Closes on VAH or VAL count as inside. Re-entry requires prior acceptance and consecutive inside closes. An interrupted count resets. Every historical close is compared with its own band; changing a count setting replays that same history.

Anchor resets, width-rank compression and alert delivery remain in the full manual. No session, feed or future-price simulator is implied here.

No band yet?

Rolling mode needs a full window behind it—200 candles by default—plus the initial calculation. Anchored mode waits for at least 10 candles in the new period by default. Also check the symbol’s data and your selected weighting.

Go deeper, one question at a time.

The full explanation is here when you need it.

How is the band calculated?

The tool spreads each candle’s activity across price rows in proportion to how much of its high–low range overlaps each row. This is an estimate, not a record of the exact trades at each price.

The busiest row becomes the POC. Equal-volume ties choose the row nearest the occupied range’s center. Starting there, the tool compares two neighboring rows above with two below and expands toward the larger total; equal totals expand upward.

The inner band targets at least 70% of the activity by default. Whole rows can take it past that target. The extended band targets 90%, or at least five percentage points more than the inner setting. Its price edges can still coincide with the inner edges.

Rolling mode uses the latest 200 candles by default. Anchored mode starts again each day by default. Each candle keeps the band calculated for that time; old closes are not reclassified against today’s band.

How is this different from VWAP or Bollinger Bands?

VWAP follows a volume-weighted average price. Bollinger Bands use a moving average and price variation. Value Envelope finds a busy price row and an activity area around it.

Its edges are not standard deviations, and its POC need not be centered. The bands can look similar while describing different things.

Exactly when do ACC, REJ and 80% appear?

ACC · acceptance: three consecutive confirmed closes above VAH or below VAL by default. The accepted state stays active until a return completes or enough closes establish acceptance on the opposite side.

80% · re-entry: after acceptance, two consecutive closes inside value by default. A close exactly on VAH or VAL is inside. An interrupted count resets; completing the return clears the accepted state.

REJ · rejection: while no accepted state is active, the candle first pokes beyond an edge and closes back across that edge. The preceding candle must not already have poked beyond its own corresponding edge. Acceptance takes priority.

The rejection close can even pass through the whole band; it need not finish inside it. A wick touch or a return inside does not always print REJ. Some short on-chart descriptions simplify this rule.

These marks record closed-candle events. They do not place entries or confirm that a later target is reached.

What do migration, shape and compression tell me?

POC migration: compare the busiest line with 10 candles ago by default. Up or down requires a move greater than the larger of half a price row or a quarter of ATR. Smaller moves read as flat.

Shape: P means the POC sits toward the upper part of value; b means lower; D means more central. It is a shortcut based on POC position, not proof of who bought, sold or closed a position.

Compression: the value-area width ranks at or below the 20th percentile of its last 100 readings by default. Anchored mode also needs 50 profile candles. Narrow does not tell you when or which way price will break out.

How do I read the dashboard and Co-Pilot?

The dashboard

Value Envelope dashboard crop showing location, POC, value area, width, shape and last event.

Read location first: where the close is now. The gauge shows its position inside value, or its distance outside in ATR. The other rows show POC and its movement, the area’s edges, width, shape and the last event with its age.

The footer shows mode, candle count, weighting, row height and row count. A SIGNAL row reports an earlier event; check how many candles ago it happened.

The Co-Pilot

Value Envelope Co-Pilot crop with NOW, WHY and WATCH explanations.

NOW describes the current state. WHY lists the readings behind it. WATCH names relevant levels and the next condition that would change the read.

Detailed mode adds confidence, blind spots and a glossary. Confidence is a hand-coded context rating, not a measured chance of success. This panel translates the same calculations; it does not add an independent prediction.

What does each setting change?

Start with the defaults, then change one setting at a time. No preset establishes that a trading plan is profitable.

Build the band

Profile mode
Default: Rolling
Rolling uses the latest candles. Anchored starts again at each chosen period.
Rolling window (bars)
Default: 200 · 20–2,000
How many recent candles contribute to a rolling profile.
Anchor period
Default: D · daily
Used in Anchored mode. It must be longer than the chart timeframe; otherwise the tool uses Rolling.
Value Area %
Default: 70 · 30–90
The minimum share of estimated activity targeted by the inner band.
Extended band %
Default: 90 · 60–99

Row height (× ATR)
Default: 0.15 · 0.05–2
Sets price-row size using ATR(50), a measure of recent price movement. Larger rows give coarser steps.
…or fixed row height (ticks, 0 = auto)
Default: 0
A positive number sets row height in the symbol’s smallest price increments.
Weighting
Default: Auto
Use reported volume when available, or one weight per candle. Volume and Time (TPO) can also be selected directly.
Min bars before bands show
Default: 10 · 1–100
Anchored mode waits for this many candles in the new period.
Re-size rows every N bars (Rolling)
Default: 1,500 · 0–5,000
Recalibrates row height during a rolling profile. Set 0 to keep the initial height.

Read the edges

Show edge signals (REJ / ACC / 80%)
Default: On
Show the event marks on the chart. The label says signals; the marks describe rules that were met.
Acceptance = N closes outside value
Default: 3 · 1–10
Consecutive closes above the upper edge or below the lower edge needed to establish a hold.
80% rule = N closes back inside
Default: 2 · 1–10
Consecutive inside closes needed after a hold outside. The rule’s name is not a measured probability.
POC migration lookback (bars)
Default: 10 · 2–100
Compare the busiest-price line now with this many candles ago.
Compressed = width rank below %
Default: 20 · 5–50
Compression starts when the band’s width rank is at or below this percentile.

A larger value-area percentage targets more activity; it does not establish that its edges are stronger. Row height stays fixed within an epoch and recalibration can change the band in visible steps.

Five ways to study it in a trading plan

These are study ideas, not instructions to enter. Define your own entry, exit, trade size and maximum loss.

1. The edge fade

Watch a failed edge test, then record whether price moves inward or leaves again. A REJ mark alone is not enough to establish a trade.

2. The acceptance continuation

After a hold outside, compare later closes and POC migration. Acceptance describes the completed count; continuation remains uncertain.

3. The “80% rule”

Study a confirmed return after acceptance. The opposite edge is a reference for the rotation idea, not a promised destination.

4. Compression watch

Mark periods of narrow value and observe what follows. Keep both directions and failed moves in your records.

5. Confluence stacking

Compare the band with levels already in your plan or another timeframe. More overlapping references do not by themselves prove a better trade.

Which alerts can I create?

Choose Value Envelope in TradingView’s alert dialog. The script provides nine named conditions:

  • Rejection at VAH / Rejection at VAL
  • Accepted above value / Accepted below value
  • 80% rule · rotation up / rotation down
  • POC cross up / POC cross down
  • Value compressed

Use Once Per Bar Close when creating a named-condition alert. These conditions use confirmed bars; the alerts describe an event, not a filled order.

Any alert() function call sends a readable message containing symbol, timeframe, event and the Co-Pilot’s NOW sentence. It covers only the six rejection, acceptance and re-entry events. POC-cross and compression alerts require their named conditions.

What can change the reading—or make it misleading?

Volume and price feeds differ. In Auto mode, the tool falls back to one weight per candle only when cumulative available volume is zero. A single zero-volume candle does not switch a populated feed to TPO.

TPO here spreads that weight across the candle’s range. It does not measure the actual time or trades at each price. The profile cannot identify traders or reveal real order flow.

The newest band can change while its candle is still open. Closed history stays tied to its own calculation. Changing inputs or data can recalculate history; rolling windows lag, and anchored profiles restart each period.

The tool describes the chart—never what price will do next. There is no backtest and no out-of-sample validation behind these rules. This is research tooling, not financial advice.
