Pip value table
At 1.00 lot with a 100,000-unit forex contract, a pip size of 0.0001 gives 10 quote-currency units per pip; a JPY pip size of 0.01 gives ¥1,000.
| Symbol | 1.00 lot | 0.10 lot | 0.01 lot | In USD |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EURUSD, GBPUSD, AUDUSD, NZDUSD | $10 | $1 | $0.10 | Same — already in USD |
| USDJPY | ¥1,000 | ¥100 | ¥10 | ¥1,000 ÷ USDJPY price |
| USDCHF, USDCAD | CHF 10 / CAD 10 | 1 | 0.10 | 10 ÷ USDCHF or USDCAD price |
| EURJPY, GBPJPY | ¥1,000 | ¥100 | ¥10 | ¥1,000 ÷ USDJPY price |
| EURGBP | £10 | £1 | £0.10 | £10 × GBPUSD price |
| XAUUSD, 100 oz, 0.10 move | $10 | $1 | $0.10 | Same — already in USD |
Contract size, pip size and which price to use
Pip value in the quote currency is lots × contract size × pip size. At 1.00 lot with a 100,000-unit contract, a pip size of 0.0001 gives 10 quote-currency units per pip; a pip size of 0.01 on a JPY quote gives ¥1,000. Other contracts and pip conventions change that value. The USD column shows the conversion a USD account needs; use the live price from your platform.
How much are 10, 50 and 100 pips worth?
EURUSD, GBPUSD, AUDUSD and NZDUSD on a USD account, standard 100,000-unit contract.
| Position | 1 pip | 10 pips | 50 pips | 100 pips |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.01 lot | $0.10 | $1 | $5 | $10 |
| 0.10 lot | $1 | $10 | $50 | $100 |
| 1.00 lot | $10 | $100 | $500 | $1,000 |
Gold (XAUUSD) pip value: $0.01, $0.10 or $1.00?
Three conventions, one arithmetic: on a 100-ounce contract every $0.01 is worth $1 on 1.00 lot.
| Price move (100-oz contract) | 1.00 lot | 0.10 lot | 0.01 lot |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.01 price move (not necessarily one tick) | $1 | $0.10 | $0.01 |
| 0.10 | $10 | $1 | $0.10 |
| 1.00 | $100 | $10 | $1 |
Which move is a gold pip, and how to check your symbol
Gold has no single pip convention. With a 100-ounce XAUUSD contract, a 0.01 price move is worth $1 on 1.00 lot; quote decimals alone do not establish the smallest trading increment. Some traders call that move a pip; many education sites call 0.10 a pip; others count a whole-dollar move. All three are the same arithmetic at different scales.
Check your own symbol in MT5: right-click XAUUSD in Market Watch → Specification, and read Contract size (often 100), Digits (2 or 3) and Tick size / Tick value. A 3-digit quote has a 0.001 point; check Tick size separately for the minimum price change. A 1-ounce contract makes every value above 100 times smaller, and a cent account shows the same numbers in US cents. A page that quotes "$1,000 per pip" on gold is using a different contract or a different pip; ask which move it means before sizing with it.
How to calculate pip value, step by step
Lots × contract × pip size, then one conversion into your account currency.
The three steps, with worked numbers
1. Value in the quote currency. Multiply lots × contract size × pip size. For 0.50 lot of EURUSD: 0.5 × 100,000 × 0.0001 = 5 USD per pip. For 0.50 lot of USDJPY: 0.5 × 100,000 × 0.01 = ¥500 per pip.
2. Convert to your account currency. If the account is in the quote currency, you are done. If it is in the base currency, divide by the current price: ¥500 ÷ 150.00 ≈ $3.33 per pip. Otherwise multiply by the rate from the quote currency to your account currency: £5 per pip on EURGBP × 1.27 GBPUSD = $6.35.
3. Use it for sizing. A planned loss is stop distance in pips × pip value. The position size calculator runs that backwards from the amount you are prepared to lose.
Pip, point and tick: which one is your platform showing?
On a five-digit EURUSD quote, 10 MT5 points make one pip.
Pipettes, points and MT5's tick value
A pip is a quoting convention: 0.0001 for most pairs and 0.01 for JPY quotes. Most platforms quote one more decimal, a fractional pip or pipette, so 10 MT5 "points" on a five-digit EURUSD quote make one pip. MT5's tick value is the value of the smallest price step for 1.00 lot, not of a pip: multiply it by the number of ticks in a pip before comparing it with this page.
