Where the numbers come from

The CFTC's Legacy futures-only Commitments of Traders, read from its public reporting API and refreshed every few hours: each market's reportable non-commercial longs minus shorts. The CFTC publishes a report on Friday at 3:30 p.m. Eastern with positions as of that Tuesday; a federal holiday moves it. The CFTC's Commitments of Traders page has every report and the release schedule.

Reading positioning

Extremes and turns say more than the sign: commercials hedge, so they sit opposite the speculators.

What a high or low COT index means

A COT index near 100 means large speculators hold their most net-long position of the range, near 0 their most net-short. Crowded positions can stay crowded for months, so the index describes the market's positioning, not a moment to trade. For the session times and contract sizes of these markets, see futures market hours and the futures tick value chart.

Method and privacy

Method: From the CFTC's Legacy futures-only report, through its public reporting API, refreshed every few hours and published by the CFTC on Fridays at 3:30 p.m. Eastern with positions as of Tuesday's close. Large speculators are the report's non-commercial traders, commercials its hedgers, small traders the non-reportable remainder; each group's net is longs minus shorts, and the three nets sum to zero. The COT index places this week's net between the group's most net-short (0) and most net-long (100) week of the range.

Common questions

What is the COT report?

The Commitments of Traders, which the CFTC publishes every Friday at 3:30 p.m. Eastern: the positions large traders hold in US futures markets as of the Tuesday before. The Legacy report splits them into commercial traders, who hedge a business, and non-commercial traders, mostly funds trading for profit; the rest is small traders' positions.

How do you read the COT report for gold?

Take the non-commercial longs minus shorts in GOLD - COMMODITY EXCHANGE INC.: that is the large speculators' net position, the figure this page leads with. Commercials, the producers and dealers hedging, are usually net short gold, so their sign says little; watch how far each group's net has moved and where it sits in its range.

What is the COT index?

Where this week's net position sits between its lowest and highest of a set range: 0 means the most net-short week of the range, 100 the most net-long. Three years, 156 weeks, is the usual range; this page also shows one year and six months. It describes positioning, not a signal to buy or sell.

When is the COT report released?

Generally on Fridays at 3:30 p.m. Eastern, with positions as of that Tuesday's close: the CFTC takes three days to process them. A federal holiday moves the release, usually to the next business day, and the CFTC posts that schedule on its site.

Who are commercials and non-commercials?

Commercials hold futures to hedge a business, such as a miner selling gold forward or a bank hedging currency risk. Non-commercials, the large speculators, are funds and traders above the CFTC's reporting level who trade for profit. Small traders are everyone below that level, worked out as what is left of the open interest.

These tools calculate from your inputs, supported historical records or explicitly labelled teaching examples. They do not verify a live account, predict future returns or confirm that a broker or prop-firm rule has been met. Missing costs, floating losses and changed market conditions can materially change outcomes. Trading can lose the capital committed to it; check the stated method and your account specifications.
