Sources, and what is left out

Rows marked CME are the margin calculator's, read from each contract's page on CME Group's site on 22 October 2026 (CME Group contract specs, read 22 Oct 2026is the first). The rest were added on 25 October 2026, when cmegroup.com refused automated reads, and are listed only where two futures brokers' published tables agree: Discount Trading: Futures contract specifications and Optimus Futures: Contract specifications. ZT, 6A, 6C, 6J, BTC and ETH are left out because the published tables disagree on their ticks, or only one lists them; CME has changed some of those ticks over the years. Palladium is the exception: both tables still show its old $0.05 tick, so its row follows NYMEX's own filing, NYMEX filing to the CFTC, 28 Oct 2020, which set the tick at $0.50 an ounce ($50) from 7 December 2020.

Ticks, points and dollars

A tick is the smallest move; a point is a move of 1.00 in the price. Dollars = ticks × tick value × contracts.

Three worked lines

ES: 5 points is 20 ticks, and 20 × $12.50 = $250 on one contract. Gold: a $3 move on 2 MGC is 30 ticks × $1.00 × 2 = $60. A $500 daily loss limit on 3 MNQ reaches 333 ticks, 83.25 points, the last third of a tick unused. Size the stop itself on the futures position size calculator, and check how many contracts a prop account allows on the contract limits tool.

Micro vs full-size contracts

The equity Micros, Micro Gold and Micro WTI are a tenth of the full contract; Micro Silver is a fifth.

Why the same tick, a tenth of the dollars

A Micro trades the same index or commodity in the same tick size with a tenth of the multiplier: MES ticks 0.25 points like ES, worth $1.25 against $12.50. Ten MES move like one ES, but each pays its own commission, so ten Micros cost more to trade than one E-mini. Margins for both are on the margin calculator.

Method and privacy

Method: Dollars = whole ticks × tick value × contracts. Tick sizes and values are each contract's CME specification: from CME's own pages, read on 22 October 2026, where marked; otherwise where two futures brokers' published tables agree, read on 25 October 2026. Commissions, exchange fees and slippage are not included.

A link with your numbers carries them after the # sign, which browsers do not send to servers, and the page takes them out of the address before any analytics loads. Common questions

What is the tick value of ES?

$12.50. ES moves in ticks of 0.25 index points and each point is worth $50, so four ticks make a point. The Micro E-mini, MES, is a tenth of it: $1.25 a tick and $5 a point.

What is the tick value of NQ and MNQ?

NQ is $5.00 a tick and $20 a point, in ticks of 0.25 index points. MNQ, its Micro, is $0.50 a tick and $2 a point, so ten MNQ move like one NQ.

What is the tick value of crude oil futures (CL)?

$10.00. CL ticks in $0.01 a barrel on 1,000 barrels, so a $1 move is $1,000. Micro WTI, MCL, is 100 barrels: $1.00 a tick.

What is the tick value of gold futures (GC and MGC)?

GC is $10.00 a tick of $0.10 an ounce on 100 ounces, so a $1 move in gold is $100. Micro Gold, MGC, is 10 ounces: $1.00 a tick and $10 for a $1 move.

What is the tick value of the 10-year note (ZN)?

$15.625. ZN ticks in halves of 1/32 of a point on $100,000 of face value, and a full point is $1,000. The 30-year bond, ZB, ticks in 1/32 at $31.25, and the 5-year note, ZF, in quarters of 1/32 at $7.8125.

How many ticks is my daily loss limit?

Divide it by the tick value times your contracts and round down: a $1,000 limit on 2 ES is 40 ticks, or 10 points; on 2 MES it is 400 ticks. The calculator's Dollars → ticks mode works it out for every contract listed.

Is a point the same as a tick?

No. A tick is the smallest move a contract's price can make; a point is a move of 1.00 in that price. ES has 4 ticks to a point, gold 10, crude oil 100 and the 10-year note 64.

These tools calculate from your inputs, supported historical records or explicitly labelled teaching examples. They do not verify a live account, predict future returns or confirm that a broker or prop-firm rule has been met. Missing costs, floating losses and changed market conditions can materially change outcomes. Trading can lose the capital committed to it; check the stated method and your account specifications.
