MT5 error 10044: The request is rejected, because the "Only position closing is allowed" rule is set for the symbol

Read SYMBOL_TRADE_MODE before opening: CLOSEONLY and DISABLED allow no new positions, LONGONLY no sells, SHORTONLY no buys.

The number after retcode= in MT5's Experts or Journal tab. 41 codes, as MQL5's reference words them.

10044

TRADE_RETCODE_CLOSE_ONLY

The request is rejected, because the "Only position closing is allowed" rule is set for the symbol

Cause and fix for 10044

What MQL5 says

10044 TRADE_RETCODE_CLOSE_ONLY
The request is rejected, because the "Only position closing is allowed" rule is set for the symbol

From MQL5's table of trade server return codes, read 22 October 2026. An Expert Advisor finds it in MqlTradeResult.retcode; the Experts and Journal tabs print it.

What causes it

The broker has set the symbol to close-only (SYMBOL_TRADE_MODE_CLOSEONLY, "Allowed only position close operations"): positions on it can be closed, not opened.

The fix in MQL5

Read SYMBOL_TRADE_MODE before opening: CLOSEONLY and DISABLED allow no new positions, LONGONLY no sells, SHORTONLY no buys. Ask the broker which symbol replaces it.

Before
#include <Trade/Trade.mqh>
CTrade trade;

void OpenSell(const string symbol, const double lots)
  {
   trade.Sell(lots, symbol);
  }
After
#include <Trade/Trade.mqh>
CTrade trade;

bool CanOpen(const string symbol, const ENUM_ORDER_TYPE type)
  {
   const long mode = SymbolInfoInteger(symbol, SYMBOL_TRADE_MODE);
   if(mode == SYMBOL_TRADE_MODE_CLOSEONLY || mode == SYMBOL_TRADE_MODE_DISABLED)
      return(false);
   if(mode == SYMBOL_TRADE_MODE_LONGONLY && type == ORDER_TYPE_SELL)
      return(false);
   if(mode == SYMBOL_TRADE_MODE_SHORTONLY && type == ORDER_TYPE_BUY)
      return(false);
   return(true);
  }

void OpenSell(const string symbol, const double lots)
  {
   if(CanOpen(symbol, ORDER_TYPE_SELL))
      trade.Sell(lots, symbol);
  }

Method: The constant and the description are MQL5's reference table of trade server return codes, read 22 October 2026. The MQL5 code compiles in MetaEditor 5 with no errors or warnings; it is an example to adapt and was not run against a trade server.

A link with your numbers carries them after the # sign, which browsers do not send to servers, and the page takes them out of the address before any analytics loads. Limits and trading risk

These tools calculate from your inputs, supported historical records or explicitly labelled teaching examples. They do not verify a live account, predict future returns or confirm that a broker or prop-firm rule has been met. Missing costs, floating losses and changed market conditions can materially change outcomes. Trading can lose the capital committed to it; check the stated method and your account specifications.
