CFD leverage limits and ASIC in Australia
From 3 official sources, checked 8 October 2026.
What the official sources say
ASIC's product intervention order for contracts for difference, in force since 29 March 2021, limits the leverage a CFD issuer may offer a retail client: 30:1 on a major currency pair (any two of the Australian dollar, British pound, Canadian dollar, euro, Japanese yen, Swiss franc and US dollar), 20:1 on a minor currency pair, gold or a major stock market index, 10:1 on other commodities and minor indices, 5:1 on shares and 2:1 on crypto-assets. The order also standardises margin close-out and limits a retail client's CFD losses to the funds in their CFD trading account.
In 2022 ASIC extended the order for five years, to 23 May 2027. In its 2026–27 markets sector priorities, published on 30 September 2026, it said it would consult this year on targeted amendments and on extending the order beyond May 2027.
This is a summary of public sources, not legal or tax advice. Rules and hours change: check with your regulator, and with your broker, before you open an account.
